Autlan Carniceria and Taqueria is the best! Their food is better than my mom's. Really, everyone should go to this place!

El Famoso
146 South Alta Street
Gonzales, CA
One day as I was returning to LA from San Francisco, travelling south on 101, hunger got the best of me and I exited at Gonzales, CA. First exit. As I drove looking for a fast food place, I came across a little place called El Famoso. As I went inside I found myself at ease since it was clean and the aromas were taking me to a gastronomical euphoria. After salivating on the menu I decided it was a seafood day and chose the "fajita de camaron" (shrimp fajitas) and a "XX" beer. It's one of those places where you feel like home. It just so happened that the owner was there and we talked about Mexican food and the extensive variety Mexico has to offer, depending on the region/state. As we continued with our conversation the chef came over with another sizzling plate called "famoso special" that was brought at the request of the owner. This plate was packed with every sea delicacy imaginable: it had MORE shrimp, crab legs, snapper fillets, clams, chicken chunks, carne asada, octopus, and veggies!!! So after a Dos XX, a chabela preparada, and a glass of rice water I was on my way to LA, once again. Worthwhile to mention that this happened 2 years ago and the five times that I have driven to San Francisco and back, I have manage to stop at El Famoso. If you read this and take a trip that way, be sure to say hello to Oscar the owner.

Tacos Clarita
4th St.
East Los Angeles, CA
El Tepeyac???? Does not have the best burrito! As a native of East LA and since I have been eating Mexican food for the past 37 years... I can give my best judgement that the burritos at Ciros down the street are much better. The meat at El Tepeyac is dryer than the Mojave and the chunks are too big. Next time you're in East LA take a trip south on Evergreen Avenue from El Tepeyac and go till you come up on 4th street, turn left and travel 3 blocks to "Tacos Clarita" and experience Mexico City's cooking flavors. Now this place is far better than the previous mentioned.

Santana's
San Diego, CA
I am a native Mexican, and I know what real Mexican food is all about ... however looking past that and just enjoying a burrito for what it is, a yummy spin off of the taco, the best burrito place in San Diego, California, is Santana's and their Famous California Burrito! French fries and all! Ps I am intersted in the history of the burrito did it orginate in japan??? [Ed's note: What the??]

If you ever come down to SD be sure to stop by Tacos el Gordo. They started in TJ but now they have a couple other stands in the San Diego area.

Alberto's
Oceanside, CA
I used to frequent a place in Oceanside, California called Alberto's. I used to eat there a couple of times a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year. The place was open 24-7 365 days year round. They made a sauce that came in a little plastic cup- a red hot sauce and I can't figure out how to replicate it. I've called them from Florida but they don't speak the best English. What I came away with was Japanese chilis (which I found) and tomatoes. Do you know the sauce i'm talking about? It isn't a chunky type of salsa either. What is the preferred cheese for quesadillas of taquerias? Any help would be appreciated. its' been 10 years since I was in Cali and the Mexican food is repugnant/deplorable in the state of Florida. I seriously considered having food Fed-exed.

[Ed's note: We include a recipe for a smoky red salsa in our book. The key is dried chiles. Good luck.]

Cocina Fresca
Ocean Beach
San Diego, CA
Cocina Fresca, in Ocean Beach, CA. in San Diego is awesome. The burritos are huge, filled with fresh vegetables, rice and beans. You can get black or refried beans and anything you want for a filling. The restaurant owners both had heart problems so wanted to open a restaurant you could eat healthy Mexican. It's wonderful.

Sergio's Tacos
Commerce, CA
The best-tasting burritos are the ones from Sergio's tacos in Commerce, California. Commerce is a suburb of Los Angeles. Oh man my mouth is watering just thinking about it! The taquero there "the taco nazi" as I call him, because he says "quien sigue" in a demanding way, makes them before you're done ordering! Get the burrito al pastor con todo!

Lupita's
Isla Vista, CA
If you're ever in the town of Isla Vista (just north of Santa Barbara), you MUST visit Lupita's! The burrito grande is incredible and made better by the fact that it is smothered in enchilada sauce. I have driven a hundred miles out of my way just to order one. By the way, the chips and salsa may be even better than the burrito itself.

Carnitas Michoacan
Moorpark, Ventura County, CA
They have my vote for the best Al Pastor on the planet. Grilled onions are key. I have been to half the states in Mexico and hit zillions of places in East and "the other" L.A.

I still vote for the Tapitio cooks that run Carnitas Michoacan!

Roberto's
Ocean Beach, CA
Any of the various Roberto's locations within San Diego. Although, the Ocean Beach Roberto's is a favourite location. My own personal favourite is the Carne Asada burrito, which consists of chopped, marinated steak, guacamole, salsa, and hot sauce.

Tito's Tacos

I have lived in Los Angeles for a good 35 years and I [am] convinced that Tito's Tacos offered the best tacos and burritos north of the Rio Grande Tito's Tacos is Located on Washington Place and Sepulveda in Culver City.

They have this Pollo Asado burrito to die for. Its got the chicken, guacamole, and sour cream on the inside. Then they set it on a plate and cover it with cheese and enchilada sauce. Delicious!!!! And the thing is huge! It must weigh about 2 lbs! Its huge and delicious! They also have a variety of other burritos, but the pollo asado one is the best!

El Teyeyac in Boyle Heights (Los Angeles). Nothing better, anywhere, anytime, anyplace. Been enjoying their food for nearly 25 years. My second favorite taquiera is Marquez. Incredibly delicious Mexican food, superb burritos -- #19 is my favorite.

Isaac's Burritos
Wilmington, CA
Their carne asada burrito is incredibly flavorful, lean and meaty. They add beans, avocado & tomato. The best part is the end, when the juices soak the compressed tortilla. Devinio!
